Yet another Parrot Update!

But this time it's from my home state of Connecticut. Local power company United Illuminating (UI) has agreed to stop euthanizing monk parakeets, for now at least. Here is the article from the Wednesday, December 7th edition of the New Haven Register.

"UI contends that the nests, which can weigh upwards of 200 pounds, are a public safety hazard, having caused numerous power outages and fires over the years." Uh, I remember how bad UI's service was when I lived there. I doubt that all its problems can be blamed on the birds.

"More than 200 birds from Bridgeport and West Haven were captured and turned over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which gassed the birds, reportedly with carbon dioxide..." Besides making the all-too-obvious jokes about Bridgeport, how exactly did they "gas" the birds? Did they put 'em in a bag connected to a tail pipe? Carbon Monoxide? And this is the Department of Agriculture we're talking about here...
