Back in the day before teh Interwebz, it was not easy to find a specific image. Many artists would create reference files of clippings of images. This was fairly labor intensive, as it meant having to go through lots and lots of newspapers and magazines, cut out images, and file them appropriately. I remember we had one in our high-school art class. For the most part Google Image Search has negated the need for a physical clipping file.
But these files still do exist! The Multnomah County Library still has one. From time to time I'll check out what they have in the collection, because chances are a lot of these images haven't ended up on the internet (yet). And appropriately enough they do have a "Bicycle" file! It's nowhere near as extensive as what you'll find on the internet, and you can't type in "1960 Tandem" or anything, just check out the folder and see what you'll get. (And you can actually bring home these images!)
My last visit turned up some interesting pics, mostly from the 70s and 80s. I'd figure I'd share with you some of them!
See, they were even doing "Tweed" Rides in the early '70's!
This one came from a Ralston Purina Annual Shareholder Report. Interesting that an American company would depict a Dutch bike way back in what looks like the early '80's.
This came from Vogue in 1992. Interesting that they were doing a "cool bike" spread 20 years ago. The Dutch/Euro city bikes and American cruisers are very much in "vogue" now, though I doubt any "bike style" piece would include that Bottechia aero-monstrosity. Well, maybe GQ.
And finally this one. I like this one a lot. Maybe it's because it's possibly from the '70's, features an older woman enjoying a bike ride, or maybe it's that classic handlebar bag? I don't know.
I'm guessing that last picture isn't actually a middle aged person but someone in their 30s (or even younger.) Everyone looked older in the 70s!
