  1. I recall the bottle dynamo I used in my teens eventually became useless after a relatively short life when the teeth on the pickup wheel (that contacts the tire) wore down (a cheap model likely). It was fun while it lasted.

  2. Yeah, that was a problem with the older ones. It's wearing away on my tire as well. Part of it is due to improper alignment of the "teeth" wheel on the tire, and part of it is due to the teeth. I've heard more modern ones with a rubber wheel wear less.
