Dude, like mid-90's mountain bikes came with chain-guards?
When I got the bike I asked a shop (Northwest Bicycles, RIP) about putting a chain guard on. They said there wasn't a way to do it with the front derailleur plus at that time (2001) getting aftermarket chainguards wasn't easy. So they put on the "pie plate" as a compromise.
Oh, I remember those cateye headlamps and the number of spiders webs I cycled through because of their woeful illumination. It was before rechargeable batteries became commonplace as well. :-)
