Notice anything different? No, I didn't get a haircut, I got them all cut. (After so many years, I still tell my grandpa's jokes.)
Yes, it's a pretty drastic change, but truth be told I was getting sick of the long hair. Yeah, it looked cool, but I was getting annoyed with tangles and hair in the face, and I don't like ponytails. So I made an appointment for a haircut at a new fancy-pants "mens" barbershop on Hawthorne. The cost was $24 which is the most I've ever paid for a haircut in my life. But since I haven't had a haircut since Tim's basement in Saskatoon* last August, where I clipped my hair in the bathroom sink, it's not like I spent a lot of money on haircuts lately. So I'll treat myself. (And you get a free shot of whiskey with the haircut too!)
The long hair was an experiment borne out of laziness. I neglected getting a haircut when we got back from the big trip, so the hair kept on growing and I decided to see how long I could grow it before I got sick of it. And I managed to grow it a good long time. This was the longest my hair had gotten since 1992, the last time I took a year off from haircuts. The big difference was in my youth I normally had longer hair, the last two decades my hair has been short by default.
It's nice to have this...weight off my head. It's nice to not have hair constantly getting in my face. Let's see how long this lasts.
*Everyone should get a Saskatoon basement haircut at least once in their life.

Hey, Handsome! I did the same thing a couple weeks ago. Exept there were a LOT of shots of whiskey and no barber. Then I got on a plane to LA. Wearing a hat.
ReplyDeleteI think it was Abbie Hoffman who said "Anybody can have short hair..." But the politics of follicles aside, short is just plain easier.

Ah yes, Abbie Hoffman. Long hair was much more a political statement in that era, and much more a hassle. You might not be able to get picked up if you hitch-hiked. (See the movie verion of "Alice's Restaurant.")
DeleteNowadays, not so much. I think you'd still get turned away for a job at Disneyland/World, but that's ok by me.

ReplyDeleteI'm a number two all over head and face every four to five weeks. I tried long hair in the '70's but couldn't get on with it.
I think long hair can work with Tweed. Just worrying about it going all grey and then looking like John McLoughlin or something.
DeleteI've never had hair as long as you. But I did moderately long hair, at one time in my life.
ReplyDeleteAfter a long summer ride around town, in the middle of August, I came back home drench in sweat. After a long contemplative look in the mirror I became set on cutting it all off.
Later, I had a friend totally buzz it off. It was a hairstyle I kept for years.
Now, as a middle-aged husband and father, my hair is the same length as yours.
Looks good.
